Following his honours degree in Mechanical Engineering Gordon gained experience with Courtaulds, Ferranti, Barratt Construction, Shell and Salamis. Developing his career from Production Engineer through Production Control, Technical Director and onto Senior Project Engineer responsible for projects of the value of £5m.

Gordon has always been interested in matters relating to the structure and culture of organisations. So in 1983 he formed a company, Bion Ltd, working offshore in the North Sea whereby the front line workers where equal shareholders within the company. The success of the company, especially in aspects of quality, was such that it very soon attracted the outside investment necessary to fund its continued development.

Gordon then moved into Management Consultancy, first with an international consultancy and then with his own practice Harehall. Two events stand out in this period. The first was a study tour to Japan and the second was attending the famous 4-day seminars presented by Dr Edwards Deming - the "quality" scholar who made such a contribution to the quality revolution in Japan in the 1950s and in the West in the 1980s. Gordon was one of the founder members of the Aberdeen Deming group in 1991 which has now evolved into The Deming Learning Network Ltd. Gordon is a Director of this learning network.

The clients of Harehall have ranged from small companies such as Tracey Kitchen Design, N W Graphics, K & L Ross (Stockists) Crossen Engineering (Tool room) onto medium sized companies - David Flatman (book retailer and publisher), DEI (offshore condition monitoring) Bon Accord Glass (double glazing) and larger organisations such as BP and British Gas plus government concerns such as Inland Revenue, Grampian Water Services and The Scottish Office.
